The Skills Initiative is excited to name our sixth annual class of Skills Initiative Scholars! The 31 selected Skills Initiative alumni will each receive funding in the amount of $1,500 to support them with continuing education costs of degree programs, education credits, and certifications. This last-dollar scholarship program is funded through generous donations totaling $50,000 from the Justamere Foundation, and is part of the Matt Bergheiser Opportunity Fund, named after University City District’s former president who conceived of The Skills Initiative.
“Education is a powerful pathway to economic mobility, and these scholarships help make that journey more accessible,” says Senior Director of Programs Dr. Romaine Thrower. “We are deeply grateful to our funders for their continued partnership and investment in our scholars as they build the skills, credentials, and confidence needed to succeed in today’s workforce and beyond.”
On Thursday, July 30th, we invited 2026 Skills Initiative Scholars to a mixer at our offices to celebrate their accomplishments and mingle over snacks and refreshments. We’re proud of our graduates who continue to invest in themselves and their careers!
Since our formation, The Skills Initiative has prioritized the continued success of program graduates well beyond the conclusion of their training. Our efforts to support alumni include tailored networking events and workshops, priority consideration on job opportunities, resume assistance, leadership development opportunities, and a housing program.
